A 40-hour work week, household chores, taking care of the family – and in between, appointments with the doctor or the tax advisor: In the fast-paced and hectic 21st century, mental resources are more demanded than ever. The so-called mental load of everyday life can become dangerous in the long run because while physical well-being is more tangible, mental health is often not given enough attention. If the effects of stress are already physically noticeable or if the burden even threatens to become chronic, disease symptoms have often already developed – but there is no need to panic: various measures to maintain mental health and thus holistic well-being can provide early relief.
There is No Such Thing as Healthy Stress
The idea of positive stress sounds quite paradoxical at first. In fact, in addition to the negative so-called distress, there is also eustress. Those affected by eustress perceive the high demand rather as a driving force and challenge; it pushes and motivates them. What both types have in common: in the long run, they make you sick. This is because the physical reaction in the form of adrenaline and cortisol is the same for both stress variants. Constantly high levels of these two hormones, which are actually meant to enable a quick escape in dangerous situations, can quickly become dangerous: In addition to diseases of the cardiovascular system, the risk of strokes increases, and the immune system is weakened. Poor sleep, weight gain, and tension can also be the consequences. Moreover, stress literally affects the stomach – and the entire digestive system.
Those who are constantly stressed also tend to withdraw, may even suffer from anxiety and depression. Performance can also decrease. This is where the vicious circle begins – and it often leads to even more stress.
Ways Out of the Stress Spiral
As nice as it would be: a life without burdens does not exist. But there are methods that at least make dealing with them easier. Yoga, meditation, and regular journaling – the written recording of thoughts and feelings – are among the best-known and most proven methods. A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, plenty of exercise in the fresh air, and adequate sleep can also make a big difference. Activities that are fun create balance – for example, a favorite hobby, spending time with loved ones, or engagement in clubs or volunteer work. Still relatively new is digital support in the form of various apps to integrate mindfulness methods into everyday life. Calming nature sounds or different noise frequencies (such as the so-called "white noise," a noise signal with a constant power density spectrum, which is perceived as particularly pleasant by human ears) are just the beginning. The digital helpers can support with relaxing breathing techniques, provide positive messages, and help monitor one's behavior and keep an eye on negative moods.
It is very important to note: none of this replaces professional help. If the suffering increases and no improvement occurs, professional therapy should always be the method of choice. There are now numerous contact points such as Depression Aid, which also provide support in the first important steps in acute cases.
